Moving Upward Together: Day 39

Day 39, Remember Your Baptism – Pastor Dave

“As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ” (Galatians 3:27, NRSV.)

Occasionally, people will ask me about my favorite things I get to do as a pastor. I tell them I love to provide pastoral care, teach Sunday school, and preach the Word, but my absolute favorite activity is when I get the privilege of baptizing someone. There is nothing better in my opinion than proclaiming the scripture, asking the questions, and generously soaking the individual with water from my large hands.

The baptismal font is located off-center on the chancel, and we can forget about it sometimes. This is why we need the consistent reminder to remember our baptisms. Remember you were named and claimed in these waters. Remember God washed your sins fresh away. Remember you were bought at a cost of Christ’s own blood.

Remember you have died to sin and been reborn by water and the Spirit. Remember.

It is so easy to forget who we are and whose we are. The world is always trying to convince us we need to live up to an impossible standard in order to have worth. The good news for believers is we’ve already received the greatest news possible. God says yes to us. In baptism, we say yes to God. That’s definitely something worth remembering.

“Holy One, you hovered over the abyss at creation and descended like a dove on the Jordan River. You were present at our baptisms, and you are as a close as a whispered prayer or a heartsick groan. Help us to remember we are yours in life and in death. Amen.”
