Worship Prayers April 28

CENTERING PRAYER

Time is
Too slow for those who Wait,
Too swift for those who Fear,
Too long for those who Grieve,
Too short for those who Rejoice,
But for those who Love,
Time is not.

- Henry van Dyke Jr.

CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 1)

Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked,
or take the path that sinners tread,
or sit in the seat of scoffers;

but their delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law they meditate day and night.
They are like trees
planted by streams of water,

which yield their fruit in its season,
and their leaves do not wither.
In all that they do, they prosper.

Come, let us worship our Lord together.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Almighty God, you brought forth the world for the love of Christ., ye we live in rebellion and turn away from your created purpose. We acknowledge the Lordship of Christ with our lips, but we do not honor you with our lives. We prefer the wide path of destruction over the narrow way to life. Therefore, we pray:

Break our rebellious will.

Instruct our hearts in the way of peace.

Expose our insincere thoughts.

Give us integrity in our quest for truth.

Release us from the fear of death.

Grant us courage in the face of evil.

Free us for joyful service in Christ our Lord.

Empower us to live as citizens of your kingdom.

We pray this for the sake of the world, in the name of Christ. (Silent Confession)

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – Heidelberg Catechism Question One

Q.1. What is your only comfort in life and in death?

A. That I am not my own, but belong—body and soul, in life and in death—to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven; in fact, all things must work together for my salvation. Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him.

Scripture for April 28

Psalm 46

For the choir director: A song of the descendants of Korah, to be sung by soprano voices.[a]

God is our refuge and strength,
    always ready to help in times of trouble.
So we will not fear when earthquakes come
    and the mountains crumble into the sea.
Let the oceans roar and foam.
    Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge! Interlude

A river brings joy to the city of our God,
    the sacred home of the Most High.
God dwells in that city; it cannot be destroyed.
    From the very break of day, God will protect it.
The nations are in chaos,
    and their kingdoms crumble!
God’s voice thunders,
    and the earth melts!
The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is here among us;
    the God of Israel[b] is our fortress. Interlude

Come, see the glorious works of the Lord:
    See how he brings destruction upon the world.
He causes wars to end throughout the earth.
    He breaks the bow and snaps the spear;
    he burns the shields with fire.

10 “Be still, and know that I am God!
    I will be honored by every nation.
    I will be honored throughout the world.”

11 The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is here among us;
    the God of Israel is our fortress. Interlude

Daily Prayers April 26

My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord. I know them and they follow me; and I give them eternal life.

Daily Readings for Friday, April 19, 2024

God of our forebears, as your chosen servant Abraham was given faith to obey your call and go out into the unknown, so may your church be granted such faith that we may follow you with courage for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. God of love, as you have given your life to us, so may we live according to your holy will revealed in Jesus Christ. Make us bold to share your life, and show your love, in the power of your Holy Spirit. Mighty God, sovereign over the nations, direct those who make, administer, and judge our laws; the President of the United States and others in authority among us; that, guided by your wisdom, they may lead us in the way of righteousness. (Add your prayers.) Amen.

Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.

(Opening sentences, prayers, and blessings are from the Book of Common Worship. Readings are from the daily lectionary in Daily Prayer. Both are published by Westminster/John Knox Press.)

Worship Prayers for April 21

 CENTERING PRAYER – Walter Rauschenbusch (1861-1918)

O God, we thank you for this earth, our home; for the wide sky and the blessed sun, for the salt sea and the running water, for the everlasting hills and the never-resting winds, for trees and the common grass underfoot.

We thank you for our senses by which we hear the songs of birds, and see the splendor of the summer fields, and taste of the autumn fruits, and rejoice in the feel of the snow, and smell the breath of the spring.

Grant us a heart wide open to all this beauty; and save our souls from being so blind that we pass unseeing when even the common thornbush is aflame with your glory, O God our creator,
Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

CALL TO WORSHIP*

How many are your works, O Lord!

In wisdom you made them all;

the earth is full of your creatures.

Be exalted, O God, above the heavens,

and let your glory be over all the earth;

for all that is in the heavens

and on the earth is yours.

Let us worship our Creator together.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION*

Lord, you call us to till and to keep, to serve and to protect, yet we neglect our responsibilities and your creation suffers. We continue to act in ways that contribute to the disruption of earth’s beauty and integrity. We are distracted by wealth, power, and personal pursuits. We fail to see our abuse of your creation is also an abuse of our relationship with you and with each other. For this we grieve and are sorry. God, grant us forgiveness, fill us with irresistible love, and renew our hearts for your sake and the sake of your creation. (Silent Confession)
