Worship Oct. 21

CENTERING PRAYER  Eternal One, whose thoughts and ways are not ours, you alone are God, awesome, holy and most high.  School us in the ways of faith and wisdom, that we, like Job, may learn to truly see and hear, and in silent humility and find blessing. Amen.

CALL TO WORSHIP
Welcome!  There are many places you could be this morning, but you have chosen to be here.
where we learn how to live in God’s Kingdom.
Welcome to this place – full of music, of words, of prayer – yet also filled with vulnerability:
where we encounter a Wisdom we cannot always understand.
Welcome to God’s House, the most vulnerable place in town:
where we talk about and with God, and are reduced to silence so we may hear the call to discipleship.
Let us worship God together.

   PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Creation’s Heart, we look around and see how we fall short in our attempts at faithfulness.  We often do things, not because it is what you call us to do, but in hopes of earning points with you.  We can become so self-absorbed, we cannot see the suffering and struggles of friends, family, strangers.  We are so desperate to get to the front of the line, we push aside the very ones you seek to honor.

Forgive us, Holy One.  Remind us that the cup we are offered overflows with grace, that the waters of baptism cleanse and make us new, and that Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, is the One who calls us to service, standing by our side, as we seek to be faithful disciples.  (Silent Confession)

SCRIPTURE READING                                                    Job 38:1-7, (34-41)

† AFFIRMATION OF FAITH - Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.

Scripture for Oct. 28

Mark 10:46-52 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

The Healing of Blind Bartimaeus

46 They came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 48 Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 Jesus stood still and said, “Call him here.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart; get up, he is calling you.” 50 So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. 51 Then Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man said to him, “My teacher,[a] let me see again.” 52 Jesus said to him, “Go; your faith has made you well.” Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way.

Daily Prayer October 26

FRIDAY
God is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for God's good pleasure.
Micah 6:1-8; Revelation 9:13-21; Luke 10:38-42
God our creator, yours is the morning and yours is the evening. Let Christ the sun of righteousness shine forever in our hearts and draw us to that light where you live in radiant glory. O Lord, our creator, by your holy prophet you taught your ancient people to seek the welfare of the cities in which they lived. We commend our neighborhood to your care, that it might be kept free from social strife and decay. Give us strength of purpose and concern for others, that we may create here a community of justice and peace where your will may be done God of glory, you see how all creation groans in labor as it awaits redemption. As we work for and await your new creation, we trust that you will answer our prayers with grace, and fulfill your promise that all things work together for good for those who love you. (Add your prayers.) Amen.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

(Opening sentences, prayers, and blessings are from the Book of Common Worship. Readings are from the daily lectionary in Daily Prayer. Both are published by Westminster/John Knox Press.)
