Worship for Sept. 30

CENTERING PRAYER  Gracious God, you give life and, in your Word, it is beautiful.  Thank you for this new day.  In each coming hour, help me to see beneath the ever-present difficulties and superficial joys into the mysteries that you have set out for your people.  Guide me toward those I meet today in a way that welcomes them and, in turn, grants me a welcome, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

CALL TO WORSHIP
Give thanks to the Lord, for God is good.
         God’s steadfast love endures forever.
Let our words and thoughts be acceptable to God;
         the Lord is our rock and our redeemer.
Let us worship our awesome God together.

   PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Merciful God, we confess we have not followed your way.  You rain down mercy upon us, yet we murmur in our discontent.  You cast out the evil within us, yet we fling curses at others. Forgive us, God of grace.  Call us home from our wandering, deliver our souls from death, and cover us with your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  (Silent Confession)

SCRIPTURE READING                                                                                                         James 5:13-20

† AFFIRMATION OF FAITH - Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.
