Daily Prayers for February 1

FRIDAY
Teach me to do your will, for you are my God.

Eternal God, Author of our life and End of our pilgrimage: Guide us by your Word and Spirit amid all perils and temptations, that we may not wander from your way, nor stumble in the darkness; but may finish our course in safety, and come to our eternal rest in you. Eternal God, your hand shaped our lives by grace and your hand rescued us from sin by love. May your hand guide us through this day, shielding us from all evil, strengthening us to do justice and love. Enable us, O God, to do all things as unto you; that small things may be filled with greatness, and great things may be crowned with humility. O God, whom we cannot love unless we love our neighbors, remove hate and prejudice from us and from all people, so that your children may be reconciled with those we fear, resent, or threaten; and live together in your peace. (Add your prayers.) Amen.
With God's help and love may your lives be blessed and your labors fruitful as you offer yourselves gladly in the service of our common Lord.

(Opening sentences, prayers, and blessings are from the Book of Common Worship. Readings are from the daily lectionary in Daily Prayer. Both are published by Westminster/John Knox Press.)

2018 Moderator’s Report

“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:28-31, NRSV.)

It has been a very busy year here at St. Mark. 2018 brought many challenges and opportunities, but, through strong leadership by your session and your faithful service, we accomplished many wonderful things. Our church is blessed. Countless numbers of volunteer servants worked tirelessly to make sure we had uplifting worship, quality education for all ages, meaningful mission engagement, and so much more. I do not have the time or space to thank all of you individually in this report, but please know I see all you do and am thankful for your service.

I have gathered very little moss in the past year. I estimate I preached at approximately 130 Saturday and Sunday services. I particularly enjoyed our sermon series focused on the ministry of the Presbyterian pastor, Mr. Fred Rogers. I officiated one wedding, preached at nine funeral services, and baptized seven people. I enjoyed getting to know many of our youngest worshippers during our time with children. I took over the Confirmation Class in January and loved working with our middle and high school students. This is such an important time in their lives and in the life of any congregation, and I was honored to walk with them for those five months.

A large portion of my work centered on strengthening the church’s Christian education ministry. I participated in two book studies and led the combined Summer Sunday school class on reclaiming civility in public discourse. I facilitated the discussions on Third Wednesday and helped to lead a new Sunday school in the Fellowship Hall. I am thankful for where we are, but I would like to see these programs grow throughout 2019. Education is a cornerstone in our faith and a hallmark of the Presbyterian Church.

We also had a lot of fun in 2018. We enjoyed chili cook offs, trivia nights, holiday parties, and community outreach celebrations. I wore lederhosen for the Fall Festival and a red coat, cap, and beard for our Breakfast with Santa. These are special events where we welcome in guests from the neighborhood, and I am so thankful to serve with such a hospitable congregation.

I attended the Presbyterian Board of Pensions Credo event back in May and the PCUSA Stewardship Kaleidoscope Conference in September. Life is full, and God is good…all the time.

In Hope and Confidence, Pastor Dave

Children's Ministry Report

L. Ogelsby
The children's ministries committee enjoyed another great year in 2018 with growth in existing programs and new areas as well. The committee focuses on programs that build the faith, mission, and fellowship of children up through 5th grade. The committee continues to oversee Sunday morning and Wednesday activities for children, nursery, computer lab, children's library, Jerusalem Festival, Bunny Breakfast, Saints, and Vacation Bible School. Children's Ministries coordinates with other committees for the Fall Festival and children's musical performances. We continued our outreach efforts by also hosting a Pet Blessing led by the children and youth.

The Children’s Library is located on the lower level and houses children’s books and DVDs, in addition to a puppet theater. A small book display is available for children outside of the adult library with a reading table. Thank you to D. Johanning and P. Marshall for maintaining and upgrading both areas. Children’s Ministries also maintains a computer lab on the lower level for Sunday School classes and smaller groups of children. The nursery and toddler rooms were updated with new flooring and is maintained by members of the committee for the convenience of our youngest children.

The Jerusalem Festival took place on Palm Sunday. Sunday school teachers led their classes through a rotation of age appropriate activities. The activities included visiting a temple, exploring plants and herbs of that time, crafts including pottery, creating a resurrection garden, the Marketplace, and, live animals. Thanks to help from numerous volunteers, the Jerusalem Festival was a successful and enjoyable family event at St. Mark.

Children's Ministries committee once again ran the Bunny Breakfast which had an increase in participants from our church family, from Claymont Preschool, and the surrounding neighborhood. Families enjoy a sit-down breakfast, egg hunts for various ages, pictures with the Easter Bunny and games. This year the committee opted to make this a free will donation event to try and increase our outreach to the community. Thanks to the Fellowship Committee for cooking.

During Wednesday evening activities, the children learn short Bible lessons from the Holy Moly series, then focus on mission-based project. The children did several projects for the Presbyterian Children’s Home and homebound St. Mark members. Towards the end of Fall, we were blessed to have our new Children’s Music Director join our children on Wednesday nights. They worked very hard for Sarah Vlodek and perfected 3 songs for the church’s enjoyment during the Christmas season.

The Saint’s Program is offered for all elementary grade students and their siblings. They meet monthly and combine mission projects and fun outings. This year they adopted six families through the Angel Tree project. St. Mark continues to amaze us with their support of this ministry. Saints outings provide an opportunity for making a connection to our children while strengthening their connection to the church. This past year the children went to Incredible Pizza, roller skating, a Cardinals game, The City Museum, and bowling. The older Saints joined the Youth in a work
weekend at Mound Ridge.

For the 2nd year, children's ministries hosted Brunch with Santa after church on December 9th. The event was a huge success. Approximately 200 people attended from church, Claymont Preschool, and the surrounding neighborhood. With the help of some of our wonderful committee and Fellowship, the brunch went off without a hitch. Santa read a story to the children, then spent a little quality time with each child. There were plenty of coloring pages, crafts, and letters to Santa for the kids to complete. Everyone commented on how much they enjoyed the event and requested that we do it again.

Vacation Bible School was once again a huge success with our Rolling River Rampage theme. One hundred and sixty students spent the week learning about God and his great actions while singing, dancing, and participating in many other fun activities. The camp program for 3rd–5 th graders continues to expand and included a field trip to Flying Spider for a day of jumping and bouncing. VBS families collected school supplies, which the campers packed in backpacks for Presbyterian Children’s Home and Services. We worked with the Youth Committee to provide multiple afternoon programs for mid and senior high youth volunteers.

The Annual Fall Festival was held in October, and serves as a fun-filled outreach activity for our church, the neighborhood, and community. Children and adults enjoyed the festivities that included a bluegrass band, a bounce house, an obstacle course, pumpkin carving, a balloon artist, pictures, a cake walk, caricature artists, a tricycle race and face painting entertain kids of all ages. New this year was our St. Marktoberfest Root Biergarten and Float Station. A big shout out goes to Pastor Dave Burgess who dressed in lederhosen and served Fitz’s root beer from a keg. Lunch was prepared by our wonderful Men’s Fellowship. We could not pull off this event without the help of all the committees of the church.

Children's ministries continue to coordinate the Supper Club and Mom’s Night Out activities at church. The group coordinates fellowship activities for those with elementary age children and others who are interested in participating. Its activities have included several pot luck dinners, an Ugly Sweater party, and a mom’s night event to prepare Advent activity kits for kids. Attendance at these events has consistently increased and varies between 10 and 20 people. Activities being considered for next year include another bowling night, a sporting event, and several dinners.

Our sincere thanks go to all of our Sunday school teachers who help our children learn about God and his bountiful love. This year we have been using the Growing in Grace and Gratitude curriculum published by PC USA. I also want to thank everyone who has served on this committee and Ellen Hynes, Director of Children’s Ministries. It has been a pleasure working with such talented, enthusiastic, cheerful and dedicated people. We also want to thank the other committees of the church; many of our activities would not happen without them.

Deacons

“The opportunity for service and caring for
God’s people is great. Through the example set by Jesus Christ, the deacons continually find ways to mobilize the strengths and resources of the congregation. In doing so, through faith, the deacons lead the congregation to accomplish tasks that serve the greater congregation and community.” – St. Mark Board of Deacons Mission Statement

To accomplish and fulfill our mission, the Board of Deacons lead ten standing committees and four major fundraising events. As elected by the congregation, the 2018 Board of Deacons was composed of seventeen deacons who serve three-year terms and a youth deacon who serves a one-year term.

During 2018, the deacons raised and distributed approximately $50,000 to mission partners as well as coordinated and participated in many hundreds of service hours to the Caregiving and Stephen Ministries as well as to mission partners and programs summarized below. The committee reports that follow are high level summaries of the activities of the highly engaged 2018 Board of Deacons. Our work is made possible by the St. Mark congregation’s and staff’s active involvement, generous donations, and prayers of support. For all that you have done and contributed, please accept the gratitude and appreciation of the deacons. Respectfully submitted, Joyce Blackwell, Deacon Moderator

Worship Prayers for January 20

CENTERING PRAYER  (J. Birch, Worship Resources)
You call us to leave all things, you who had nothing.
You call us to be servants, you who came to serve.
You call us to share the load, you who carried our sin.
You call us to speak your word, you who lived it daily.
You call us to be followers, and in your strength, we will.

CALL TO WORSHIP

How precious is the steadfast love of God.
All people may take refuge in the shadow of God’s embrace.
Christ is the fountain of life.
In Christ we behold the Light of God.
Come. Let us worship our Lord together.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Almighty God, we confess we are led astray by the idols of our world. We depend on our possessions and do trust in your grace. We carelessly consume the gifts you offer and fail to be faithful stewards of the earth’s resources. We seek security in the might of the sword rather than the strength of your Holy Spirit. Forgive us, we pray.Lead us to true repentance that we may serve you faithfully. Through Christ we continue to pray. (Silent Confession)

Scripture for Jan. 27

1 Corinthians 12:12-31 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

One Body with Many Members

12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
14 Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15 If the foot would say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear would say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 19 If all were a single member, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many members, yet one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 On the contrary, the members of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and those members of the body that we think less honorable we clothe with greater honor, and our less respectable members are treated with greater respect; 24 whereas our more respectable members do not need this. But God has so arranged the body, giving the greater honor to the inferior member, 25 that there may be no dissension within the body, but the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it.
27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers; then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But strive for the greater gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.

Daily Prayer for January 25, 2019

FRIDAY
You, O Lord, are full of compassion and mercy, slow to anger, and rich in kindness.

God, our creator, you have given us work to do and call us to use our talents for the good of all. Guide us as we work, and teach us to live in the Spirit who made us your sons and daughters, in the love that made us sisters and brothers. Remember, O God, your church. Unite it in the truth of your Word and empower it in ministry to the world. Remember the world of nations. By your Spirit renew the face of the earth; let peace and justice prevail. Remember our family and friends. Bless them and watch over them; be gracious to them and give them peace. Remember the sick and the suffering, the aged and the dying. Encourage them and give them hope. Rejoicing in the communion of saints, we remember with thanksgiving all your faithful servants, whom you have called from this life. We are grateful that for them death is no more, nor is there sorrow, crying, or pain, for the former things have passed away. (Add your prayers,) Amen.
As God's own, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, and patience, forgiving each other as the Lord has forgiven you, and crown all these things with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

Worship Prayers for January 13

CENTERING PRAYER

“Loving God, we begin this new day in the sure knowledge you have claimed us as your children. In all that we do, keep us mindful of actions that are pleasing in your sight. In all that we say, make us attentive to the witness we give to your love. Let our lives be an example to all whom we encounter, living as daughters and sons of God who follow in the path of Jesus, our Lord and our brother. Amen.”

CALL TO WORSHIP

The voice of God resounds upon the water.
The Spirit of the Lord hovers over the stream.
The Son of God is named, “Beloved.”
And all who worship shout out, “Glory!”
Ascribe to the Lord majesty and strength.
Let us worship God in holy splendor.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

We are precious in your sight, yet we often forget we are your beloved. We confess our love is fickle and inconstant. We follow selfish goals and deny our way of life harms others and
hurts your world. We are sorry, and we want to change. Create in us a clean heart, strengthen our resolve, reconcile us one to another, and bless us with your peace. We continue to pray in Christ’s name. (Silent Confession)

Worship was cancelled January 13, but Pastor Dave Burgess gave the sermon via Youtube.

Scripture for January 20

1 Corinthians 12:1-11 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

Spiritual Gifts

12 Now concerning spiritual gifts,[a] brothers and sisters,[b] I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak. 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says “Let Jesus be cursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit.
4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses.

Daily Prayers for January 18

FRIDAY
You, O Lord, are full of compassion and mercy, slow to anger, and
rich in kindness.
God our creator, you made all things in your wisdom, and in your love you save us. We pray for the whole creation. Overthrow evil powers, right what is wrong, feed and satisfy those who thirst for justice, so that all your children may freely enjoy the earth you have made, and joyfully sing your praises. Take all our doubts and uncertainties, O God, and fill us with such faith that we may be confident of your love and loyal in the service of him who died and yet lives for us, Jesus Christ the Lord. Merciful God, you bear the pain of the world. Look with compassion on those who are sick; cheer them by your word, and bring healing as a sign of your grace. God of comfort, stand with those who sorrow; that they may be sure that neither death nor life, nor things present nor things to come, shall separate them from your love. (Add your prayers,) Amen.
As God's own, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, and patience, forgiving each other as the Lord has forgiven you, and crown all these things with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
