Worship August 2

August 2, 2020
ORDER OF WORSHIP

CENTERING PRAYER

Gracious God, you come among your people as the One who fashioned all things by your Word, redeemed all things by your sacrifice, and whose presence brings assurance and hope. Pour out your Spirit of love upon us again as we gather in your name, and help us declare your mighty acts with our mouths and with our deeds. Amen.

WELCOME and ANNOUNCEMENTS

CALL TO WORSHIP                                    (Acts 2:17, 21)

God declares: “I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh.

Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy.

Your young shall see visions. The elders shall dream dreams.

Both men and women shall prophesy.

And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

† HYMN      “Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness”      Hymnal #291

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Holy and Merciful God, we do not know how to pray as we ought, and we know too well our constant failures to do as you command and hold fast to your word. Forgive us for the divisions we nurtures, guide us to your word, keep us in your care, and lead us into faith. We trust your word that the spirit of truth will show us all things and grant us courage and peace. (Silent Confession)

ASSURANCE OF GRACE

† SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Confession of Belhar 4

We believe that, the church must therefore stand by people in any form of suffering and need, which implies, among other things, that the church must witness against any form of injustice, so that justice may roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream....We believe that, in obedience to Jesus Christ, its only head, the church is called to confess and to do all these things, even though the authorities and human laws might forbid them and punishment and suffering be the consequence. Jesus is Lord.
