Intentional vs. Accidental Saints

In our Thursday morning church discussion last week of Nadia Bolz-Weber's book Accidental Saints, several in the discussion indicated that intentionally being Christian was important to them.  How could they do that and be an "accidental saint", someone who stumbles into being Christ-like?

As a teacher, I would compare it to my teaching.  I intentionally made daily lesson plans with goals, objectives, activities, but occasionally a student would ask a question that to answer it would keep me from achieving those daily goals.  I would have to weigh it --- stick to my intentional plan or shut my plan book and teach a whole new lesson---an accidental lesson.  This is called a "teachable moment"---giving the lesson that is needed not the one that was planned.

I often had this situation when I was teaching English as Second Language.  The students would ask a  language question  or cultural question not in my plan book.  One year I was teaching in a district that was so rigid that they didn't really support the "teachable moment".  All material to be copied needed to be submitted a week in advance, had to be approved by the principal---no exceptions.  So, if a family of 3 from Taiwan moved into the district, I couldn't have work for them because I had only 10 copies that had been pre-approved 10 days earlier.  But, even worse was not being able to teach to the questions that popped up almost daily.  I by-passed the red tape by getting copies at Kinko's, paying for them myself (and ultimately finding another district to work in).

Can you imagine a baseball team manager playing a game intentionally without allowing the accidental.  They would print up the roster and could not change it.  If a player became injured, wasn't playing well, or thrown out of the game, the game would have to be played as"intended." Or a coach who can't  change the game plan?

Most of us aren't teachers or baseball managers but practicing Christians.  We can have a plan each morning to read the Bible, pray before meals, donate food to Circle of Concern, but if we don't keep our hearts open, we've missed the point.  The difficult conversation about race may help you understand your neighbor better. The telephone call interrupting your Bible study may be helping a friend who needs a listening ear.  Letting someone ahead of you on Manchester Road on your way to Circle may help a mother running late picking her child up on time. Paying it forward at McDonald's may help the man who just realized he left his wallet at home.   All are opportunities to put our Christian principles to work without knowing it ahead of time..  By deviating from our intentional practices, getting out of our comfort zone, we can often become the saints we want to be:  accidental saints.

Love BEARS all things

Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 1 Corinthians 13:7 (ESV)

“God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good.”

Can I say the same? I made him myself! He is the first teddy bear I remember having. He’s made of a sheet from the rag bin and material that was used for doll clothes. He was stitched on a tiny Singer sewing machine and by my 8-year-old hands. The construction would probably not be called “very good” but he’s still here 65+ years later.

Since then, teddy bears and I have developed a connection. I love them and they love me. Nanook was my first real teddy bear and the only one until I got to college. Phi Bear is the Alpha Phi mascot and so began a serious attachment to the little loves. Nothing says love like a teddy bear or gives me such warm hugs when no one else is around. I do programs for groups on the history of teddy bears and it never gets old. (An aside, the first program I ever did for PW was the very first teddy bear Powerpoint many moons ago.)

Phi Bear

So where is this going? Teddy bears are symbols of love, care, hope and support. For me, they are reminders that love bears all things! Love helps us help others as we bear their burdens with them so they are never alone. We are reminded that God is love. Hopefully sharing love and the love of God with others is something I can do at a “very good” level. I am a work in progress as are the handmade bears. Even the bear making skills progressed when I made one for my mother way back when..

The PW Brunch in September 2021 will have a teddy bear theme. I can hardly wait. Mark your calendar for Saturday, September 11. I know there are many teddy bears and pictures out there just waiting to share their stories. Now is the time to start rounding them up. In the meantime, share lots of safe bearhugs as the world around us begins to open up.

Godspeed my friends,

Gaspode and Mary Beth Powell

Forgive us, O Christ, maker of peace, and teach us to follow in your way. (silent confession)

Scripture for April 18, 2021

 Luke 24:36b-48

Road to Emmaus appearance, by Joseph von Führich, 1837.

Jesus Appears to the Disciples

36 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”

37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. 38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”

40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence.

44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”

45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things.

SECOND EASTER

 by Judy Richardson

March 30, 2021

For the second year in a row Palm Sunday was celebrated in a parking lot at St Mark Presbyterian Church. We had to roll our windows down to hear the service. The cold March breezes were blocked by other cars around us. The radio broadcasting system was not working but the speakers were loud and true. We sang and we prayed silently that we will be able to enter our house of worship again soon.

Spring is bursting everywhere. There are daffodils and the dogwoods are blooming. It seemed like they appeared suddenly. God’s world is beginning its seasonal decorating and joy is beginning to break out in our hearts.

The COVID pandemic is killing fewer people in the US now as elderly and chronically ill people are getting their vaccinations. Unfortunately, other countries are not doing as well with vaccinations. We worry that variants will find their way back to our shores and undermine the effectiveness of our vaccines.

Easter will mark 2 weeks since I received my second dose of the Pfizer vaccine. I am looking forward to spending time with my grandsons before they no longer appreciate a grandma hug. Hopefully vaccines will be available for them soon.

This Easter we will celebrate in the Church parking lot. We will have virtual services available on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Easter. We are grateful for the generous work required to present these services. There will probably always be a place for virtual services and meetings, but in-person gathering- which we always took for granted-will be a blessed gift when it returns. Meanwhile, we will celebrate God’s sacrifice and enjoy the beauty of this wonderful season.

God’s science of flowers amazes

Chlorophyll in tune

The crocus and daffodils

Proudly display it

But need no mention at all

They still find their way

God’s marching wonders to display

As dazzled I stand breathless

I humbly walk blind

 To God’s majesty unfurled

I walk humbled as I seek

Paths of righteousness

God’s guidance to follow

To preserve the beauty now

So generations can receive God’s mercy & natures glory

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of the saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Scripture for April 11

 John 20:19-31

Jesus appears to the disciples.jpg
Jesus appears to his disciples after he has risen.
In "The life of Jesus of Nazareth: eighty pictures"
 (Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1906).

Jesus Appears to His Disciples

19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.

21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

Jesus Appears to Thomas

24 Now Thomas (also known as Didymus[a]), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”

28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

The Purpose of John’s Gospel

30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe[b] that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Daily Prayer April 9, 2021

God is love, and those who abide in love, abide in God, and God abides in them.

Daily Readings for Friday, April 9, 2021

Eternal God, we praise you for your mighty love given in Christ's sacrifice on the cross, and the new life we have received by his resurrection. We thank you for the presence of Christ in our weakness and suffering, the ministry of Word and Sacrament, all who work to help and heal, sacrifices made for our benefit, opportunities for our generous giving. God of grace let our concern for others reflect Christ's self-giving love, not only in our prayers, but also in our practice. We pray for those subjected to tyranny and oppression, wounded and injured people, those who face death, those who may be our enemies. Eternal God, your love is stronger than death, and your passion more fierce than the grave. We rejoice in the lives of those whom you have drawn into your eternal embrace. Keep us in joyful communion with them until we join the saints of every people and nation, gathered before your throne in ceaseless praise. (Add your prayers.) Amen.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

(Opening sentences, prayers, and blessings are from the Book of Common Worship. Readings are from the daily lectionary in Daily Prayer. Both are published by Westminster/John Knox Press.)

Prophecy Fulfilled

As we approached Holy Week this year, my mind wandered back to a painting that hangs in the Narthex. I did not know the backstory for the painting but with a little help from my friends, this information that appeared in a March, 1986, St. Mark Newsletter found its way to my inbox.

Charles Long’s Prophecy Fulfilled, a painting in acrylic and oil was presented to St. Mark by Charles on Thursday, March 27, 1986. We are most appreciative of Charles’ talent and generous contribution to St. Mark.

Prophecy Fulfilled depicts events leading up to and including the Crucifixion.

Anointing of Jesus at Bethany, Matthew 26:10-13

Palm Sunday with Christ on the donkey entering Jerusalem, Mark 11:7-10

The Passover Supper with broken bread and chalice, Matthew 26:17–19

The washing of the disciples’ feet by Jesus, John 13:1-17

The betrayal by Judas, Matthew 26:14-16

Joseph of Arimathaea and the three women at the foot of the cross, Mark 15:42-47

The slain lamb as the sacrificial Lamb of God, John 1:29

The Cross with blood from the nails and a purple robe at the base, depicting Christ. Matthew 27:27-31

I did not know Charles Long but we all know his daughter Pat Marshall. During this Holy Week may we all pause and reflect on the events shown in the art work. When we are back in Church, take time to enjoy the painting, a gift of love to share the story with all who enter the Narthex.

A Lament for Clean Water

Oh God, you created for us clean, plentiful water that would rain on our crops, cleanse and hydrate all living creatures.

Now, our water is polluted and many of our brothers and sisters throughout the world die from disease in the water that they drink.

We know that you are faithful to us and supply what we need but it is also our responsibility to protect what you have given us.

Please help those with power to use their resources and influence to help those lacking clean water.

Please hear our prayers as we strive to do what we, people of power are able to do to provide life sustaining clean water for those who lack it.
