Twelve Days of Christmas

I am always a little irritated when people sing the "Twelve Days of Christmas" BEFORE Christmas.  No, the 12 Days of Christmas are between Dec. 25 and Jan. 6.  Don't get me started on people who remove all of their Christmas decorations on Jan. 1.

Recently Barb D. shared with us at Small Group the following information While Snopes disagrees with the history behind it, I still like the symbolic tie-in.  After all no one knows for sure:

The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ
2 Turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments
3 French hens stood for faith, hope and love
4 Calling birds were 4 Gospels:  Matthew, Mark, Luke and John
5 Golden rings were 5 books of Torah (first 5 books of the Bible)
6 Geese a-laying (6 Days of Creation)
7 Swans a-swimming were for the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit:  Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership and Mercy.
8 Maid a-milking were the Beatitudes
9 Ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit:  Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-Control.
10 Lords a-leaping were the Ten Commandments
11 pipers piping stood for the 11 faithful disciples
12 drummers drumming symbolized the 12 points of belief in the Apostle's Creed

The image above is from a web-site, Our Daily Green,  that has a different interpretation for those interested in the environment and charitable giving.

Then, Jerie M-L. shared another interesting interpretation for Jan. 6.  Please click here for "Women's Christmas"and a wonderful poem about "the map you make yourself"

Meanwhile Happy Epiphany!
