ORDER OF WORSHIP

CENTERING PRAYER Faithful Lord, present in sorrow, present in hope, allow our lament with space to seek you, that we may not forget that your steadfast love never ceases and your Spirit forever flows. Amen.

PRELUDE

WELCOME and ANNOUNCEMENTS

CALL TO WORSHIP
Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord.
Lord, hear my voice!
Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications!
Lord, hear my voice!
I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope.
Lord, hear my voice!
My soul waits for the Lord – more than those who watch for the morning.
Lord, hear our voices!

† HYMN There Is a Balm in Gilead     Hymnal #792

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Merciful God, you have called us to live in sincere faith and to suffer for the gospel. We confess we do not come before you with a clear conscience. Our faith is clouded by sin and uncertainty. We shrink from your call to live sacrificially on behalf of others. Too quickly, we seek our own ease and comfort first. We confess that in our own lives, and in the church, we rely on our power rather than yours. Forgive us, we pray, for we are fractured and fearful disciples. Take away from us a spirit of cowardice, and restore to us the spirit of power rightly used, of love unconditionally offered, and of self-discipline gracefully lived. In new mercy, forgive us and increase our faith, that we may be your faithful servants. In Christ’s name we pray. (Silent Confession)

ASSURANCE OF GRACE

† SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you.

SCRIPTURE Lamentations 1

SERMON “Lonesome Town” Rev. Dr. Dave Burgess

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
