Flickering Light

I didn't celebrate
Christmas this year
so much as
fell through it,
skating fast in
the bright light
of anticipation onto
the thin ice
of expectation, momentum
yielding to gravity,
plunged into clarity,
numbed not by
cold, but by
witness of the
tragic repetition above,
seen now through
a splintered surface
in the dim,
flickering light of
the New Year.
