Before worship was a chance for reunions---the parents of Drew (on the right) had been charter members with Bob Lucas on the left.
Members were happy to see our recently retired organist, Mary, who came in from Columbia.
Her husband, John is meeting with two of our seminary students from Austin, Texas (David decided to join the choir one more time).
A bagpiper led the procession for our liturgists and pastors to begin the worship. The children's choir sang a piece they had prepared: "Find Us Faithful."
This was not just St. Mark Presbyterian's 50th birthday party, but Pentecost Sunday---the birthday of the Christian Church. The red balloons and red clothing mark that occasion.
Next, was time with children with Pastor Susan, the children and an ant farm to demonstrate that we are like ants with a special role in the church.
Our choir joined us in "The Friendship Hymn" written by Mike Beale, our late Saturday musician. When the idea of a special hymn for the 50th Anniversary came up, the planning committee turned to Mike. Mike's hymn is a gift of love to us from him. He wanted to be sure that it could be sung easily by the congregation with words that illustrated the mission and family of St. Mark. For more on Mike, Click Here.
The Choir, accompanied by timpani, trumpet, trombone, percussion, flute, organ and piano, sang the anthem "Great Our Joy."
Worship concluded with the recessional "Scotland the Brave" on bagpipes. But, the celebration continued with a clipping tradition.
