Scripture for Sept. 30 and Oct 1

 Matthew 21:23-32

The Authority of Jesus QuestionedThe Authority of Jesus Questioned

23 Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him. “By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you this authority?”

24 Jesus replied, “I will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 25 John’s baptism—where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or of human origin?”

They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘Of human origin’—we are afraid of the people, for they all hold that John was a prophet.”

27 So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”

Then he said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.

The Parable of the Two Sons

28 “What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’

29 “‘I will not,’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went.

30 “Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go.

31 “Which of the two did what his father wanted?”

“The first,” they answered.

Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. 32 For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him.

Daily Prayer September 29

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God.

Daily Readings for Friday, September 29, 2023

Eternal God, Author of our life and End of our pilgrimage: Guide us by your Word and Spirit amid all perils and temptations, that we may not wander from your way, nor stumble in the darkness; but may finish our course in safety, and come to our eternal rest in you. Eternal God, your hand shaped our lives by grace and your hand rescued us from sin by love. May your hand guide us through this day, shielding us from all evil, strengthening us to do justice and love. Enable us, O God, to do all things as unto you; that small things may be filled with greatness, and great things may be crowned with humility. O God, whom we cannot love unless we love our neighbors, remove hate and prejudice from us and from all people, so that your children may be reconciled with those we fear, resent, or threaten; and live together in your peace. (Add your prayers.) Amen.

With God's help and love may your lives be blessed and your labors fruitful as you offer yourselves gladly in the service of our common Lord.

(Opening sentences, prayers, and blessings are from the Book of Common Worship. Readings are from the daily lectionary in Daily Prayer. Both are published by Westminster/John Knox Press.)

FAITH STORY

do not fear, for I am with you. -Isaiah 41:10

Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen - Hebrews 11;1.

engraved on the entrance of a church in Greenwich, England

I have always been a believer since attending Sunday school, helping to teach in high school and sporadically attending as a young adult. Wanting to give my young daughters a Christian education, I was encouraged to join St. Mark in 1983.

A dark time in my life occurred in 1989. My mother had a second heart attack in Florida and being a single mom, it was difficult to travel to her. Three days later my recently divorced husband had a massive heart attack and suddenly died while living in Michigan. Arrangements were made and my girls (ages 14 and 11) and I traveled to New Jersey for his services.

My stress level was extremely high as weeks earlier we moved to a new home and the girls had changed schools. Thoughts were focused on helping the girls get through this and I was just taking one day at a time. Throughout this tough period, I felt sure Jesus was with me. I also knew God and his helpers were providing comfort and hope.

While we had a long recovery, we were in time able to get through this. I was probably a juvenile Christian, but I later realized those experiences helped me grow closer to God.

St. Mark’s small groups and the friendships that developed, have nourished my faith in the subsequent years. It is now very fulfilling to be part of the St. Mark community and I enjoy participating in a number of ways.

Deacons in Action

Your worship support committees have been busy this summer. Glenn Knopf, head of our Usher Teams, reviewed old procedures and met with Pastor MP and the Safety Team. The result is a new list of instructions/procedures the usher teams follow before, during, and after services.

As we have moved into a post Co-vid Communion setting, Judy Richardson, Chairperson of the Communion Committee, and Valerie Steiner worked with Pastor MP and Clerk of Session, Cay Noble, to review and update Communion procedures. In an effort of inclusivity, all Communion elements are now gluten free. A big thank you to Valerie Steiner who sourced and purchased gluten free elements.

Moving into fall and winter, we have sign ups for Sunday service liturgists. As a liturgist, the Pastors provide you with the written components of the worship service for you to read. This will be emailed several days in advance of the service for you to review. If you are interested in signing up or have any questions, please contact Pastor MP.

Worship Prayers

CENTERING PRAYER

O God who knows our every need before we can even ask, who provides everything we need, and who blesses us all. Make us truly thankful and empower us to bless others from the gifts you so freely give. We pray this for the glory of your name. Amen.

CALL TO WORSHIP

O give thanks to the Lord!

The Lord hears the cries of the people.

Give thanks to the Lord.

The woks of the Lord are great.

Remember what God has done.

Give thanks to the Lord.

God has done miracles,

and the Lord always remembers God’s covenant.

Give thanks to the Lord

and praise God’s holy name.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Gracious God, we seek after many things, but we fail to seek your presence. We expect generosity, but we do not share it with others. We are neither gracious or grateful. We fail to remember all you have done for us. Forgive us and fill our hearts with gratitude. Help us to share our gifts and strengthen our legs so we can run after you, O God. In Jesus’ name we pray. (Silent Confession)

Prayer after Offering

Lord, giver of all good gifts, thank you for the resources gathered here. Use these offerings for the advancement of your kingdom; in Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Scripture for Sept 23 and 24

 Matthew 20:1-16

The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard

20 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. He agreed to pay them a denarius[a] for the day and sent them into his vineyard.

“About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. He told them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’ So they went.

“He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing. About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, ‘Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’

“‘Because no one has hired us,’ they answered.

“He said to them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard.’

“When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.’

“The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius. 10 So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius. 11 When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner. 12 ‘These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’

13 “But he answered one of them, ‘I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius? 14 Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you. 15 Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’

16 “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”

Daily Prayers September 22

You, O Lord, are full of compassion and mercy, slow to anger, and rich
in kindness.

Daily Readings for Friday, September 22, 2023

God our creator, you made all things in your wisdom, and in your love you save us. We pray for the whole creation. Overthrow evil powers, right what is wrong, feed and satisfy those who thirst for justice, so that all your children may freely enjoy the earth you have made, and joyfully sing your praises. Take all our doubts and uncertainties, O God, and fill us with such faith that we may be confident of your love and loyal in the service of him who died and yet lives for us, Jesus Christ the Lord. Merciful God, you bear the pain of the world. Look with compassion on those who are sick; cheer them by your word, and bring healing as a sign of your grace. God of comfort, stand with those who sorrow; that they may be sure that neither death nor life, nor things present nor things to come, shall separate them from your love. (Add your prayers,) Amen.

As God's own, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, and patience, forgiving each other as the Lord has forgiven you, and crown all these things with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

Balance with Faith

"Tree Pose"

When attempting to write my "This, I believe" statement, I started to write about the importance of teaching children how to be happy, successful adults.  It was important to me that our daughters had a balanced life: social, physical activity, team work, creativity, music, academics, service, spiritual.  So, when one wanted to quit the church choir, she needed to find another way to serve, be on a team, be spiritual and have music in her life.

And then it hit me:  "BALANCE" has been the overarching goal of my entire life not just in parenting.  As a stay at home mom, I always volunteered at the church, attended classes, served my community, did something that gave me pleasure and did some sort of exercise in addition to traditional "Mom roles" .  It wasn't always easy maintaining that balance.  My volunteer positions often stole time for me and time for my family.  I didn't have time for personal reflection or fun while I ran from activity to activity.  I used my dining room chairs to keep balance.

Having my finger in so many pots sometimes lead to a cluttered house.  One of the ways I stayed organized, active and clutter free was to put notebooks, gym bags, books on my dining room chairs.  Each chair represented an activity:  Picture Lady at Henry School, Church circle, Citizen's Advisory Council, AAUW, Mademoiselle Health Club,  Historical Society, Parkway evening classes, Sunday School Teaching.  Being a people-pleaser, it's hard for me to say no when asked to take on a new responsibility but when I ran out of dining room chairs, I could either quit something or I would have  to say no to something new.  This allowed me to still volunteer but also kept me from getting so involved that I didn't have "fun time" with my children or for myself: I was able to focus on other aspects of my life. I'm sure I puzzled a lot of people when I'd say, "Sorry, I can't---I've run out of dining room chairs".

Every aspect of my life tries to achieve balance. My diet is balanced: I choose mixed vegetable, a salad and mixed fruit  rather than an apple or green beans.  The church blog balances announcements, prayers, mission, inspiration and scripture. I was more pleased when my daughters were nominated for Best All-Around than when they were class officers or on homecoming court. I even rotate my shoes, wearing a different pair each day which dictates what I wear more than the weather does.

Sometimes it's hard for others to see the importance of balance.  Dave could watch Major Crimes repeats all day but I insist on the TV being off until noon.  Although he is an introvert, I try to get him to socialize, in addition to his much needed time alone. Balance in politics is also something I cannot control. Although I can vote for the most moderate candidate, she often does not win.  I'm not happy when one party is in control.  I love the give and take of compromise.

Balance in my religious/spiritual life is also important: worship, study, service, meditation.  We worship with YouTube, attend Small Groups and Sunday School via Zoom with our St. Mark friends, but our service, meditation and social are done mostly here at McCrite, our retirement home.  I use my Stephen Ministry training to listen to my new friends here, but I also help others when possible like bringing packages to my neighbor who doesn't walk well or listening patiently while a friend tells me repeatedly (sometimes within an hour's time) about her job before she retired.  While the weather is nice, I sit outside for meditation but we also have several meditation opportunities here at McCrite through videos, staff members hosting devotionals and Tai Chi.  I'm optimistic that my spiritual life will soon be in balance too.

So how does my core belief of balance impact my spiritual life?  When I feel anxious, stressed or overwhelmed with concerns, I pray for help. . . .not for answers.  My life sometimes feels out of control; I'm floundering.  I know the answers are within me, but I doubt myself.  This happens mostly at 3 AM when I am most vulnerable.  I say a prayer and  have faith that God is there to support me through the night and will help me with the answers in the morning. . What I need is reassurance, a bit of propping up until I can . . .get my balance.

.So, when McCrite offered a class in balance, I smiled to myself knowing that was one class I probably wouldn't need for awhile.  Not only do I try to balance my life, but I also still practice yoga most mornings ending in the tree pose at the end of my version of Salute to the Sun.

Worship Prayers for September. 17

CENTERING PRAYER God, our source and our salvation, in love you made us, and by love you

redeemed us. May your love for us bear fruit in our forgiveness of others, that in this life we may know your all-embracing compassion and, in the world, receive the everlasting joy of fellowship you share with your Son, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

CALL TO WORSHIP People of God, bless the Lord, bless God’s holy name. For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is God’s steadfast love for us. Come, let us worship our giving and forgiving God together.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Loving God, we confess we fail to live in harmony with our siblings. We are self-righteous in our attitudes, closed-minded in our beliefs, and judgmental in our opinions. We shun those whose ways we do not understand and despise those who do not endorse our convictions. Forgive our sins of discord and conceit, and heal our divisiveness and quarreling. Help us to be charitable with others that we may dwell in peace with Christ who is Lord of all. (Silent Confession)

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Scripture for September 16 and 17

 Matthew 18:21-35

Scot's Church, Melbourne Australia

The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant

21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”

22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.[a]

23 “Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24 As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold[b] was brought to him. 25 Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.

26 “At this the servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ 27 The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.

28 “But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins.[c] He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded.

29 “His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it back.’

30 “But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. 31 When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened.

32 “Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33 Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ 34 In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.

35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”

Daily Prayer September 15

Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the
Lord Jesus.

Daily Readings for Friday, September 15, 2023

God, our creator, you have given us work to do and call us to use our talents for the good of all. Guide us as we work, and teach us to live in the Spirit who made us your sons and daughters, in the love that made us sisters and brothers. Remember, O God, your church. Unite it in the truth of your Word and empower it in ministry to the world. Remember the world of nations. By your Spirit renew the face of the earth; let peace and justice prevail. Remember our family and friends. Bless them and watch over them; be gracious to them and give them peace. Remember the sick and the suffering, the aged and the dying. Encourage them and give them hope. Rejoicing in the communion of saints, we remember with thanksgiving all your faithful servants, whom you have called from this life. We are grateful that for them death is no more, nor is there sorrow, crying, or pain, for the former things have passed away. (Add your prayers.) Amen.

Go forth into the world, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit.
